VU: Virtual University of Pakistan

Virtual University of Pakistan (VU) is a Pakistani public university. Virtual University is Pakistan’s first university based entirely on modern information and communication technology. Established in 2002 by the Government of Pakistan to promote distance education in modern information and communication technologies as its main objectives, the university is known for its online lectures and broadcasting complex programs regardless of the students’ location. It is a Higher Education Commission approved university.

The university offers undergraduate and post-graduate courses in business administration, economics, computer science and information technology. Because of their strong reliance on online lectures, Pakistani students living abroad are also enrolled in university programs.
Since its inception in 2002, VU has expanded its operations to reach more than 100 cities across the country with 190 related institutions providing student support services.

Virtual University has two types of campuses. The first ones are its own campuses and are called its offices. Its head office is “M.A Jinnah Campus, Defence Road, Off Raiwind Road Lahore Punjab, Pakistan”. Second ones are called private (PVC) campuses and are operated by private organizations (more commonly known as affiliated campuses).

The university relies on digital media, the internet and free satellite television broadcasts to broadcast education. The university has four television channels. VU has many campuses spread all over the country. Students are free to watch their lectures in the comfort of their own homes or to join these campuses.

Students and teachers use the Internet to communicate with each other. To this end, Virtual University has developed an Online Learning Management System (LMS) where students have 24/7 access to study materials, lesson videos and notes and text. The LMS is also used to provide students with activities and to hold pop questions and practice tests.
