BIO733: Applied Biostatistics

Biostatistics is the use of mathematical techniques in scientific research in health-related fields, including medicine, biology, and public health, and the development of new study tools in these areas. BIO733 Handouts pdf

Biostatisticians play a key role in designing studies, analyzing data, and creating ways to attack research problems such as the identification of major risk factors for heart disease, lung disease, and cancer – testing for risk factors for human health, etc.

Course Overview

This course will provide researchers with practical skills that they can apply to advanced methods in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. They will be introduced to the concept of causal factors using observational data. Students will be able to correctly choose a mathematical analysis method to deal with specific research questions, perform selected mathematical analysis using SAS software to analyze statistics, present and interpret results correctly and reach accurate and logical conclusions. BIO733: Applied Biostatistics

Statistics

Statistics is a branch of applied statistics that includes the collection, interpretation, analysis, and assumptions of conclusions from quantitative data. At the moment the need to convert large amounts of data from multiple used fields into useful information has encouraged both theoretical and practical mathematical development.

Biostatistics

It is a mathematical field Research and application of theory and methods of analyzing data from random processes or events Research on how we make sense of data. Those analytical methods that have been found to be particularly useful and most common in the development and analysis of health and public health research have been called biostatistics.

Data

Data for facts and statistics were collected, analyzed, and summarized for presentation and interpretation. Data may be categorized as value or quality.

What Biostatisticians Do

Biostatisticians play one of the five major roles in public health work. It is their job to do a lot of research to identify health risks. They are biomedical researchers focused on solving public health problems. Biostatisticians follow a scientific method to test their theories for empirical research. Biostatistician specialists perform clinical trials, surveys, laboratory tests, focus groups, spatial surveys, and condition studies.

Survival Analysis

Survival analysis is concerned with the simulation of time-to-outcome data, i.e. data in which the main interest variance is the interval between the specified source and the occurrence of a profit. An interesting event is often called the result or end (some terms include termination or intended event, or failure). Survival data may also be referred to as event-to-event data, lifetime data, failure time data, loyalty data, time data, or event history data. It appears most commonly in Medical, Social Sciences, and Engineering applications.

Variable:

It is a factor that takes different values from different people, places, or things. Variables can be categorized as Quantitative or as quality.

Quantitative Variables:

Sometimes called “numerical variables,” these variables represent the approximate value. Examples include:
• Number of learners in the class
• Number of square feet in the house
• City population

Qualitative Variables:

Sometimes referred to as “class” variables, these variables take on words or labels and can fit into categories. Examples include:
• Eye color (eg “blue”, “green”, “brown”)
• Gender (eg “male”, “female”)
• Dog breed (eg “lab”, “bulldog”, “poodle”)
