Details of TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Program
Based on the agreement with The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS), the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) calls the attention of researchers at German research institutions to the possibility of inviting early-career researchers of all disciplines from sub-Saharan African countries to spend three months at their institution in Germany for the purpose of research and cooperation.

The DFG will pay for travel and lodging costs throughout the participant’s stay in Germany. According to a contract the two organizations have signed, UNESCO is responsible for managing the administrative and financial operations of TWAS.

Financial Benefits of TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Program
The DFG gives the host institution a lump sum of €2,350 per month to cover the guest’s living expenses and travel-related charges. Additionally, up to €1,350 in travel expenses is reimbursed for the visitor’s flights and trains to and from the institution. The amount of funds available to the hosting institution each month for direct project expenses like materials and lab fees are up to €700.

TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Program Criteria
The following criteria must be met by visiting researchers in order to submit a proposal:
- They must originate from a nation in sub-Saharan Africa.
- They need to be working on research in a university or other research facility in a sub-Saharan African nation.
- The PhD must have been earned no earlier than 2018 for applicants; however, for female applicants, the PhD year limit can be extended by two years for each kid, thus for a woman with one child, the PhD year would be 2016 or later.
- Visitors who have children must receive their doctorates no more than two years (a maximum of six years) prior to each kid.
- They cannot be working on any projects with the host institution or conducting any work in Germany at the time.
- For additional visits, particularly those aimed at creating collaborative research initiatives, the DFG financial instrument Initiation of International Collaboration is available (see link under “Further Information”).
- TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visit grantees from the past are not eligible to reapply.
- All academic disciplines will be taken into account.
Who can Apply for TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Program?
Postdoctoral researchers from sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa, are eligible to take a three-month “Cooperation Visit” to a facility in Germany. The DFG expressly welcomes proposal submissions from researchers of all genders and sexual orientations, from diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, ideological, and social backgrounds, at various stages of their careers, from different types of higher education institutions and research institutions, as well as from researchers who have disabilities or chronic illnesses.

By no later than 6 September 2023, proposals must be submitted to TWAS by visiting researchers. Along with a project proposal, the proposal must also include a formal invitation from the host institution that outlines the study topic of the collaboration and provides details on the infrastructure that will be made accessible to the guest.
