PSY632: Theory and Practice of Counseling

Counseling

Like new career advice. There was a growing movement of direction, as opposed to traditional psychotherapy. Counseling shares many aspects of other relief activities. People who work in these fields are expected to help others, e.g., medical doctors, psychiatrists, nurses, paramedics, school counselors, etc.

Helping Relationships

A supportive relationship is one in which at least one stakeholder aims to promote growth, development, maturity, improved performance, and better coping with another’s health. This definition describes the various relationships between people in social settings, e.g., mother and child, teacher-teacher, and many other relationships in which people interact and their interactions affect the behaviors and attitudes of others. However, the counselor’s relationship with the client affects in a different way, different from other interactions.

Helping Relationships Features

Affectiveness: Helping relationships are more effective (emotionally and emotionally) than understanding.

Intensity: The counselor and client are expected to freely share their ideas and how they respond to each other and to the process.

Growth: Relationships fluctuate. As the client grows and changes, so does the relationship. Counseling is a different and flexible process where, from counselor and client, one helps the other. The mentor helps the client grow in a positive way and uses their resources to grow.

Privacy: During or after the counseling session all disclosure to a client is confidential.

Support: Counselors, through counseling relationships, provide the client with a support system that often provides the necessary stability to take risks and change behavior.

Honesty: A supportive relationship is based on trust and open communication between the counselor and the client.
