MCM401: Fundamentals of Public Relations

Definition of Public Relations

“Community relations are a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their communities.

Nowadays PR is not well understood and should try and create a positive image or outlook and/or improve the distorted image. This is not true. This is the only marketing and advertising component of PR. PR is about creating and understanding information that often involves active change. Therefore, it means that PR is a form of Communication that applies to any type of organization, commercial or non-commercial in the private or public sector.

Different PR Strategies

In the old days for PR purposes people used Pictograms (Chinese characters are still an example.), Wall paintings years ago in caves about ancient peoples, inscriptions on stone tablets, Ancient buildings e.g. towers, early temples, and mosques, and paintings in caves in Zimbabwe carrying portable messages. The Scriptures communicated with one another and told people about the faith. while these days credit boards, handouts, printing and electronic media, sponsorship, free sample, corporate ownership practices, audio and video media, conferences, Special Offers conferences, etc. a few visual PR techniques that are used to achieve defined goals.

How does PR work?

Whether an organization’s PR is healthy or not depends on the type of organization and the situation at a particular time. It is therefore important that we examine how PR helps different organizations. So let’s first separate the type of organizations.

What does Public Relations Accomplish?

There are many goals that can be achieved through professional work in public relations. Any one of them, any group of them, or all of them may be the basis of a social engagement program. Professional public relations guide all activities in achieving the chosen goal; External attempts are avoided – just the volume of the news clips means nothing.
