ENG517: Computer Assisted Language Learning
Recent advances in technology and communication provide new opportunities to help and improve the effectiveness of language learning. Given the importance of this latest in the context of expanding the EU, Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has become, at a rapid pace, both exciting and effective in the field of language learning research.
Definition of CALL
Computer literacy (CALL), British, or Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) / Computer-Aided Language Instruction (CALI), USA, is briefly described in Levy’s special edition (1997: p. Aim of CALL

Specifically, CALL is represented by the use of computer technologies that promote academic learning, including word processing, presentation packages, guided ball and exercises, tutor, impersonation, problem-solving, games, multimedia CD-ROM, and online applications such as e-e. email, chat and the World Wide Web (WWW) for language learning purposes.
Other Terms Associated With CALL
There are a few words associated with CALL. NAMING is known in various ways as Computer-Aided Language Learning (CALL), Computer-Assisted Language Instruction (CALI), and Computer-Enhanced Language Learning (CELL). The first two terms usually refer to the use of a computer for language learning and teaching, whereas CELL means to use CALL in an accessible environment (Hoven, 1999).
Significance of CALL
There are many ways to think about the CALL sector, but another useful approach, especially for newcomers to the field, is to differentiate computer use by the active role of the educator and tool, popular ideas in CALL by Levy (1997). A flashcard vocabulary program or an online grammar set can represent the use of the instructor, in which the computer in some way has a teaching function.
A language learning function that includes a word processor, email program, or web search engine like Google can oversee the use of tools, whereas a computer does not have a prominent teaching function. This difference is sometimes reflected in the unfortunate division of the CALL between those who see the computer primarily as an interdisciplinary delivery machine – the computer as a teacher – and those who see it primarily as a way for students to know. real language and communication opportunities and enhancements offered by computers – computer as a tool.
