ENG513: Language Teaching Methods

Significance of Language

Language permeates every aspect of human experience, and it creates and displays images of what is happening. It is almost impossible to imagine human life without it. However, we seldom think about it. We do not care about the existence of the universe inside or near us, just like a fish (or, right?) Does not care about the water that is soaked in it. Even those who study the language systematically do not fully understand what it is. An example of this: After carefully combining both Western and non-Western language ideas developed over the years, the leading French linguist, Julia Kristeva (1989, p. 329) concludes her book on linguistics with a humiliating word: “that which is still unknown — language.”

Language As a System

We all know that human language is a well-designed and well-designed tool. That is all the basic components of language function in a coherent and orderly way. They are certainly not a random collection of different units. From one perspective, language research is a study of its programs and sub-programs. By treating language as a system, we simply acknowledge that each unit of language, from one sound to a complex word to a larger text — spoken or written — has its own character, and each has its own set of rules, limited and dependent on its cohesive units.

Language as Ideology

Ideology is “a body of organized, organized ideas” (Kress & Hodge, 1979, p. 6). When explained, it sounds simple and straightforward. In fact, ideology is a controversial concept. Its reference and compliance cross fields such as anthropology, sociology, political science, history, and cultural studies. Linguistics enters late and confused, despite the fact that language and ideas are closely linked. Among the many definitions of the concept of ideas, there is one common thread that goes through all of them in infallibility: its bonds to power and domination.

Language as Discourse

In the field of language, the term expression is used to refer to “the state of spoken or written language which has an internal relationship of meaning and meaning (e.g., words, structures, conjunctions) related in relation to external communication function or purpose. And audience/speaker provided” (Celce-Murcia & Olshtain 2000, p. 4) . The focus here is on the unit of interactive and contextual language use. During the 1970s, speech analysis began to find reasons in part as a response to Chomskyan language domination as a system focused on abbreviated units and separate units of phonology, syntax, and semantics. contribute to our understanding of language as a language; here, we briefly consider the seminal activities of Halliday, Hymes, and Austin.
