ENG503: Introduction to ELT

What is ELT?

As a field of study, ELT focuses on teaching and learning English. Most of the research and publishing activities for language use focus on language teaching and learning. English language teaching is common in those countries where English is not the first language (EFL, ESL, and EIL). It is also taught in English-speaking countries because many people from non-English-speaking countries move there. Teaching and learning the language is often regarded as a very difficult process. Learners’ difficulty also depends on how different their native language is from English. English language learners often make grammatical, vocabulary, and pronunciation mistakes.

Introduction to Student Assessment

In ELT, assessment is used to determine what a student knows or can do in the English language. Language proficiency tests can include only one skill (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) or a combination of two or more of these skills. Several types of tests are used to test English language proficiency. For Examples, formal and informal assessments, constructive and summative assessments, general practice and subject-based assessments, general and alternative assessments, computer-based assessments, etc.

What Is a Language?

People can communicate with one another. We are able to exchange information, beliefs, opinions, desires, threats, commands, information, promises, declarations, and feelings. “I would regard language as a set of (limited or infinite) sentences, each of which is limited in length and is made up of a set of finite elements.” (Chomsky, 1957) Our communication system before anything else is language. Language is a system that associates sounds (or touches) with meanings in a way that uses words and sentences. “Language is a human and an unnatural way of expressing ideas, emotions, and desires through voluntary gestures.” (Sapir, 1921)
