ENG001: Elementary English

Introduction To Journalistic Writing

“The invention of writing is probably the most important tool for human development, making it possible for each new generation to build upon previous work, to transfer knowledge from one person to another, in all cultures and times. “

Qualities Of Good Writing

“Anyone who wishes to produce a good text must try, before allowing himself to be tempted by the best qualities, to be straightforward, simple, short, strong, and clear.”

H. W Fowler / The King’s English went on to say:

  • Choose a name that is more common than the one far away.
  • Choose a word that is more realistic than abstract.
  • Choose one word instead of circumlocution.
  • Choose a word shorter than long.
  • Choose a Saxon word instead of Romance.

“The secret to good writing is to clean the sentence in its purest parts. Each useless word, each long word which may be a short word, and each adverb has the same meanings as those already in action, the whole artificial structure leaving the reader unsure of who is doing it – these thousands and one. adulterers who degrade the message.

Collocations

Collocation is the relationship between two words or groups of words that often go together and form a common expression. When this expression is repeated, the words ‘stick’ to our minds. ‘Crystal clear’, ‘middle management’ ‘nuclear family’, and ‘cosmetic surgery’ are examples of two different words. Some words are often found together because they form a compound noun, for example ‘riding boots’ or ‘cyclist’.

What is a verb?

The verb is perhaps the most important part of a sentence. A compound verb or action asserts something about a topic in a sentence and expresses actions, events, or situations of existence. A compound verb or action is a critical aspect of a sentence adverb.

What is an adverb?

An adverb can change a verb, an adjective, another adverb, a phrase, or a clause. The adverb indicates the method, time, place, cause, or degree and answers questions such as “how,” “when,” “where,” and “how”. While some extensions can be identified by the suffix of the “ly” element, most of them should be identified by disassembling the system relationships within a sentence or a whole paragraph. Unlike an adjective, an adverb can be found in various places within a sentence.
