CS614: Data Warehousing

What is Data Warehousing?

The data warehouse (DWH) is a place where an organization stores data by extracting it from applications and making it available for ad-hoc queries and scheduled reporting. In contrast, the process of building a data warehouse involves designing a data model that can generate data quickly. The data stored on DWH is different from the data available in the workspace. It is organized so that relevant data can be grouped together to facilitate daily operations, analysis, and reporting. This helps to determine trends over time and allows users to create programs based on that information. Therefore, to emphasize the importance of using the data warehouse for businesses.

Why Data Warehousing?

The global economy has transformed the industrial age into a knowledge-driven economy. The information age is characterized by computer technology, modern communication technology, and internet technology; they are all very popular in the world today. Governments around the world have recognized the power of knowledge, as “many things” in developing their economies, which not only create public wealth but also affect the future of the country. Thus, many countries around the world have incorporated modern information technology into their strategic plans. They see it as a vital strategic source for the development of their society, and they strive to achieve and remain at the top of the modern knowledge economy.

The Need for a Data Warehouse

Data are defined as numbers or other facts represented or recorded in a form suitable for computer processing. Data is usually a record or result of a task or activity that involves changing content on a website or adding lines to tables. Information in its simplest form is logically processed data. By processing, summarizing, or analyzing data, organizations create information. For example, current balance, items sold, cash made, etc.

This information should be designed to enhance individual knowledge, and therefore, ultimately be tailored to the needs of the recipient. The information is processed data to help and provide answers to questions such as “who”, “what”, “where”, and “when”. Information, on the other hand, is the use of information and data and provides insight by answering “how-to” questions.
