CS610: Computer Networks

Network

A network is defined as a system for connecting computers using a single transmission technology. Computers can communicate with others on the network. They can send and receive data from each other when they are in the network.

Internet

The Internet is defined as a set of networks connected to routers that are designed to pass traffic between any computers connected to any network in the set. With the Internet, many remote computers can communicate.

Networks in Everyday Life

Extensive use of networks is on the business side. Networks are used for advertising, production, posting, editing, payment, and accounting purposes. In fact, there is now a whole industry developing advanced communication technologies. In addition to this networks are used at home and for example, to switch and control different devices from the same location. Networks are very useful at the level of government as the coalition government, local government and military organizations use the networks for communication purposes. In education, we have online libraries that we can visit on our home PC. All of this is just for the sake of networks.

Resources sharing

Service sharing means sharing resources that are available between multiple users. In the office as it is more expensive to give each employee a different printer. Therefore if the printer is assigned to staff one printer will be accessible to each employee. This leads to the promotion of resource sharing.

Resource sharing Objective

The principle of sharing resources is to make all programs, tools, and dates available to anyone on the network regardless of device location and user. For example printer sharing between office workers and information, sharing is the goal of sharing resources.

Concept of ‘Packet’

Network systems separate data into smaller blocks or packets called packets, which they send individually. Why do we need packets rather than pieces? The answer to this question is that both the sender and the recipient need to connect in order to detect transmission errors. And personal communication between each pair of computers is impossible. That’s why to solve these problems shared network connections are made between multiple workstations.

Transmission Errors

Transmission errors can occur for a variety of reasons such as disruption or high power can damage data during a transfer. As a result, lost bits or small amounts can be replaced.

Error Detection And Correction

In order to detect and correct errors, the frames include additional information, which is entered by the sender and checked by the recipient. This way incorrect data can be rejected. Also, incorrect data can be corrected and accepted.

PARITY CHECKING:

Error detection has a variety of mechanisms by which rating tests are also commonly used. In the measurement test, the measurement refers to the number of bits set to 1 in the data object.

There are two types:

• Even Parity
• Odd Parity

EVEN PARITY:

In even parity, the no. of 1’s in data should be an even number.

ODD PARITY:

In an Odd parity, the no. of bits should be an odd number.
