Data Communication is defined as the process by which more than one computers transmit information, instructions to one another, and share resources. In other words, communication is the act or process by which we can send or receive data.

CS601: Data Communication

Data Communication

Data communication refers to the exchange of data between a source and a receiver using a type of transmission media such as a telephone cable. Data communication is said to be local if communicating devices are in the same building or in the same limited area.

Source And Receiver

Source and receiver descriptions are very simple. The data transfer device is known as the source and the device that receives the data transmitted is known as the recipient. Data communication is aimed at data transfer and data retention during the process but not the actual production of information from the source and receiver.

Components Of Data Communication System

The Communication Program consists of the following components:

Message:

Information or data to be communicated. It may contain text, numbers, pictures, sound or video, and any combination of these.

Sender:

It is the device/computer that creates and sends that message.

Receiver:

It is the device or computer that receives the message. The location of the receiving computer is usually different from that of the sender’s computer. The distance between the sender and the recipient depends on the type of network used.

Medium:

It is a channel or visible path where a message is sent from sender to recipient. Inside can be connected such as twisted cables, coaxial cables, fiber-optic cables, or wireless ways such as laser, radio waves, and microwaves.

Protocol:

A set of rules that govern the communication between machines. Both the sender and the recipient follow the same terms for communication.

Type of data communication

As we know data communication is communication where we can send or receive data from one device to another. Data connections are divided into three types:

Simplex Communication:

One-way communication or we can say one communication where one device only receives and the other device only sends data and devices use their entire capacity for transmission. For example, IoT, keyboard data entry, music listing using speaker, etc.

Half Duplex communication:

It is a two-way communication or we can say that it is a bidirectional communication in which both the devices can send and receive data but not at the same time. When one device is sending data then another device is only receiving and vice-versa. For example, walkie-talkie.

Full-duplex communication:

It is a two-way communication or we can say that it is a bidirectional communication in which both the devices can send and receive data at the same time. For example, mobile phones, landlines, etc.
