CS507: Information System

What are Information Systems?

Related components work together to collect, process, store and disseminate information to support decision-making, coordination, analysis, and visualization in an organization.

Manual Vs Computerised Information Systems

As advances were made in all areas of life, manual information systems were transformed into computer systems. In a handmade environment, the concept of conversion was difficult to apply, as data capturing was a result in itself that included simple calculations. The concept of a control system is growing exponentially with the emergence of computer information systems. The concept of the Information System now exists with the use and benefits of Computers as an inevitable part.

What is a Computer-based Information System (CBIS)?

CBIS is an Information System that uses computer and communication technology to perform its intended functions. At CBIS, information technology (IT) becomes part of the information system. The names of the Information System (IS) and the Computer Based Information System (CBIS) with the widespread use of computers in almost every field make it inevitable to think of IS as CBIS.

Why Information Systems?

In modern times, there has been a growing need for the use of information systems. Let’s look at what factors have increased the effectiveness of effective information systems.

Emerging Global Economies

The high level of foreign trade has led to the export and export of goods that require internal communication in order to be well integrated. The core business functions (production, finance, and customer support) are spread across the country.

Transforming Industrial Economies

The industrial economy has begun to unite as a knowledge-based economy. Manufacturing jobs are shifted to low-income countries. Additional opportunities are available in education, health care, banks, insurance firms, and law firms. More information and knowledge is made into solid products. Expected high commitment to customer e.g. night delivery package, global booking systems.

Transformed Business Enterprise

The structure of the corporate business has also changed, initially, the organizations were usually Hierarchical, Centralized, and organized according to the SOP’s Fixed Set. However, organizations have now turned to Flatter, Decentralized and Flexible structures. Information Technology makes it easy and effective to promote this new culture.

Emerging Digital Firms

Firms where all-important business processes and customer and supplier relationships and employees are digitally empowered and important business assets are managed by digital firms. This results in a faster response to more flexibility to survive and gain global reach.

Strategic Planning for Information Resources (SPIR)

When a company accepts SPIR information service plans and firm plans are developed simultaneously. Business strategy and IT-related strategies should go hand in hand. An IT-related strategy should be driven by a business strategy and the first should support the success of the latter. Any inconsistencies or deviations between the two should be eliminated and avoided. Investing in IT is expensive and unchanging. Such investments are also monitored and controlled by the IT strategy. So any investment that does not support a business plan can be in vain.

What are Systems?

A system is a group of objects linked to the same purpose to achieve a goal. Example, Purchase & Sales System.

Types of Systems

  • Open-Loop System
  • Closed-Loop System
  • Open Systems
  • Closed Systems
