Summary of the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

Based on sustained good academic progress, the AU EGL scholarship is extendable for a total of four years of undergraduate study. All AU majors are available to students who are interested in applying.

In Washington, D.C., there is a private research university called The American University. The majority of its 90-acre main campus is located in Northwest Washington, D.C.’s Spring Valley neighborhood on Ward Circle.

Benefits of AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

The AU EGL scholarship pays for one international student’s whole billable AU costs (full tuition, lodging, and board), who will require a non-immigrant visa (ideally an F-1 or J-1 student visa) in order to study in the United States. Non-billable fees like required health insurance, books, airfare, taxes, and other costs (which total about US$4,000 annually) are not covered by the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

For AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, preference will be given to:

  • students from abroad who have surmounted a variety of difficulties as well as individuals from various and underrepresented socioeconomic and global origins.
  • A minimum GPA equivalent of 3.8 (or being in the top 10% of the graduating class) for grades 9 through 12.
  • a track record of leadership, voluntarism, community involvement, and support for the needs of their own people.
  • Those students that have one of the following: 95+ TOEFL iBT (all subscores must be 20 or above); subscores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL (taken after May 31, 2017); 7.0+ IELTS (all subscores must be 6.0 or above; 33 minimum SAT Reading Subscore; 29 minimum ACT English; 65 minimum PTE; 120+ Duolingo (all subscores must be 110 or above; or a Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher. A sub-score of 169 or more is required for each.
  • students who will graduate by June 2024 but are currently enrolled in secondary or high school.
  • IB students should aim to graduate with a full IB diploma that includes at least three HL topics. Before August 2024, students enrolled in the British A-Level system must finish 13 years of education and at least 3 A levels.

  • You are a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident of the United States, or you hold dual citizenship.
  • You are currently enrolled in post-secondary coursework at another university in your home country or the United States, or you have already started your studies there.

AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship Deadline

The priority deadline for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is December 15, 2023, however, you must submit your application for the scholarship as well as the Common or Coalition Application and foreign admissions by January 15, 2024, at the latest. For autumn (August) 2023, AU EGLS applicants must submit a Regular Decision application. Apply Early Decision (ED) not.

AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship Application Procedure

To apply for AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, candidates should follow the steps given below:

  • Fill out the online AU EGLS application; it will be accessible starting on September 15, 2023.
  • Send a bank letter and the AU Certification of Finances (AU CFIS) form, each of which must show that you have at least $4,000 in U.S. currency. These can be faxed to +1-202-885-1025 or uploaded using your Future Eagle Portal. Bank letter samples and the AU CFIS form sample
  • By no later than December 15, 2023, you must send in your official TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Assessment English exam, Duolingo English, PTE, or other exam scores. Please have the testing company send the American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, District of Columbia, official English proficiency score reports. Note that students are not permitted to submit their own scores.
  • The Common Application or Coalition Application must be finished and submitted by the AU EGLS priority deadline of December 15, 2023, or at the latest, by January 15, 2024, along with all required supporting documentation. Please take note that a bank letter confirming a minimum of US$4,000 (not US$78,296) must be included in the preliminary AU EGLS application packet. Students whose applications are incomplete or lack all required supporting materials before the deadline will not be considered.
  • Please include a letter from your EducationUSA center’s adviser confirming your eligibility if you are applying through a program supported by EducationUSA or if you have previously received a FLEX or YES high school scholarship from the U.S. Department of State. You can ask for a PDF copy of the letter to be emailed to levinson@american.edu.
  • Even if your name isn’t chosen as one of the finalists, you could still be accepted to American University in Washington, DC, and you might be qualified for partial merit scholarships. You must, however, provide proof of finances totalling US$78,296 (expected expenditures for the first year of study) in order to move further with the application process.
  • For AU EGL semi-finals and finalists, extra essay submissions or Zoom interviews will be necessary. Please email intadm@american.edu if you have any questions.
